Rogers hated Vane and chose to believe them, granting them the pardon and allowing them to stay. Their time as honest men, however, did not last long.
James Bonny learned about the relationship and brought Anne to Governor Rogers, who ordered her whipped on charges of adultery.
Rackham offered to buy Anne in a "divorce by purchase", because he loved her, but her husband sternly refused. This caused Anne to flee Nassau and run away with Rackham.
They sailed the Caribbean for two months, taking over other pirate ships. Rackham would often invite the crew of ships that he attacked to join his own.
Anne became pregnant and went to Cuba to have the child. In September , the Bahamas' Governor Woodes Rogers issued a proclamation declaring Rackham and his crew pirates—although it was not published until October After publication of the warrant, pirate hunter Jonathan Barnet and former pirate Jean Bonadvis started in pursuit of Rackham, who was cruising near Jamaica capturing numerous small fishing vessels and terrorizing fishermen along the northern Jamaican coastline.
Rackham had come across a small vessel crewed by nine English pirates, and they joined Rackham on his ship for a bout of drinking while at anchor, during which they became intoxicated at Dry Harbour Bay in Jamaica, October Barnet's sloop attacked Rackham's ship and captured it after a fight presumably led by Mary Read and Anne Bonny.
Rackham and his crew were brought to Spanish Town , Jamaica, in November , where they were tried and convicted of piracy and sentenced to be hanged.
Rackham was executed in Port Royal on 18 November , his body then gibbeted on display on a very small islet at a main entrance to Port Royal now known as Rackham's Cay.
Anne Bonny and Mary Read both claimed to be pregnant at their trials, ten days after Rackham's execution, and so were given a temporary stay , and imprisoned at Fort Charles until the claim was proven.
Read died in her cell April , most likely of fever related to childbirth. There is no historical record of Bonny's release or of her execution.

Rackham and his men made their way back to Nassau, where they appeared before Governor Rogers and asked to accept the royal pardon, claiming that Vane had forced them to become pirates.
Rogers, who hated Vane, believed them and allowed them to accept the pardon and stay. Their time as honest men would not last long.
It was about this time that Rackham met Anne Bonny, the wife of John Bonny, a petty pirate who had switched sides and now made a meager living informing the governor on his former mates.
Anne and Jack hit it off, and before long they were petitioning the governor for an annulment of her marriage, which was not granted. She returned afterward.
Meanwhile, Anne met Mary Read, a cross-dressing Englishwoman who had also spent time as a pirate. Soon, Rackham got bored of life on shore and decided to return to piracy.
For about three months, the new crew attacked fishermen and poorly armed merchants, mostly in the waters off Jamaica. The crew swiftly earned a reputation for ruthlessness, particularly the two women, who dressed, fought, and swore just as well as their male companions.
Thomas further said that if it were not for their large breasts, she would not have known that Bonny and Read were women.
Jonathan Barnet had been hunting Rackham and his crew and he cornered them in late October According to legend, the men hid below deck while Bonny and Read stayed above and fought.
Rackham and his whole crew were captured and sent to Spanish Town, Jamaica, for trial. Rackham and the men were swiftly tried and found guilty: they were hanged in Port Royal on Nov.
Rackham was just 37 years old. Bonny was reportedly allowed to see Rackham one last time, and she said to him "I'm sorry to see you here, but if you had fought like a man, you need not have hanged like a dog.
Bonny and Read were spared the noose because they were both pregnant: Read died in prison shortly thereafter, but the eventual fate of Bonny is unclear.
Rackham's body was put in a gibbet and hung on a small island in the harbor still known as Rackham's Cay.
Rackham wasn't a great pirate. His brief tenures as captain were marked more by daring and bravery than pirating skill.
His best prize, the Kingston , was only in his possession for a few days, and he never had the impact on the Caribbean and transatlantic commerce that others like Blackbeard , Edward Low , "Black Bart" Roberts, or even his one-time mentor Vane did.
Rackham is primarily remembered today for his association with Read and Bonny, two fascinating historical figures.
It is safe to say that if it were not for them, Rackham would be but a footnote in pirate lore. Rackham did leave one other legacy, however: his flag.
Pirates at the time made their own flags, usually black or red with white or red symbols on them. Rackham's flag was black with a white skull over two crossed swords: this banner has gained worldwide popularity as "the" pirate flag.

This sounds a bit artificial maybe, but in our opinion it would close the gap between customers and crew much easier and quicker. Also the presence of the onboard photographer and bloggers was never really properly explained too us.
They make the bed every day and change towels every other day. The whole traditional boat is just stunning! The one thing we missed here was to see the boat with the sails up.
We asked it a couple of times throughout the trip with the promise they would get them out on the last day. FOOD: Very good quality and huge quantity of food.
The chef is talented and very kind and humble. Big fat thumbs up! Because of the early season timing of our trip the visibility was a little less than ideal a lot of the time so definitely something to keep in mind when considering booking.
A little about the choice of divesites. But honestly we would have preferred diving some of the most memorable ones like Shadowreef multiple times in stead of having explored more different ones that were sadly very average sometimes because of visibility.
The guides were very good spotters and knowledgable. We are not super experienced divers, and almost the whole time we had 1 guide for the 2 of us and felt very safe.
Equipment was of good quality and in excellent condition. Everybody is supposed to make sure they remember their own towel and where they put it, but clearly this does not always work out.
For example: mark a place on the drying line with room number. You also have the chance to use the onboard kayaks or SUP a couple of times.
Adam and Julie were great. Indonesian staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. Boat had charm. Food was good. Raja Ampat is stunning.
Price seemed very fair. Thank you to both of you for your attention and friendliness. The boat is amazing and very comfortable, with enough room for ten people.
Between dives, you can relax on the shadowed dining area or on the sundeck, perfect to enjoy the sunset everyday. The cabins are small but very cozy with good air conditioned and bathroom.
The food is excellent. Congrats to the chef! The diving operation is fantastic. You don't have to carry anything to the speed boats.
The crew take care of every detail and each group dives with two guides. You feel really safe! Raja Ampat biodiversity is incredible, no doubt it's one of the best dive sites in the world.
And as a bonus, we spent the full moon New Year's Eve with fireworks and a barbecue on the beach. We had a fabulous time!
I can strongly recommend Calico Jack for a diving adventure! Adam was an amazing host - nothing was too much trouble and he spent a lot of time with us chatting about the trip, the dives, about the Komodo islands and the boat - we loved the information and his genuine desire to ensure that we enjoyed as many activities as we wanted.
The diving was exciting - we saw lots of mantas and turtles, we got up close with about 12 Komodo dragons and saw the sunset flight of the bats - incredibly beautiful.
The food was excellent - lots of variety! The crew were amazing - helpful and respectful of our privacy, and we got a chance to play frisbee and football with them and the other guests on a beach when we had an evening picnic.
Absolutely Amazing Live aboard experience; What a boat! The Calico Jack crew were outstanding on both trips first to to Raja Ampat , and the Komodos in The diving is spectacular with pristine marine environments, Yes, just like the photos!
The dive equipment was well maintained and the dive briefings informed us what to look out for at each site which was very helpful when the areas were so full of life and diversity.
Diving the Komodos was more strenuous but that's the conditions for swimming with the large schools of Manta. Calico jack is so much more than a liveaboard dive experience, it's a life adventure.
The itineraries included such unexpected treasures: sunsets on desolate islands with white sand like flour, walking into jungle to see birds of paradise, visiting National parks and Komodo dragons, snorkelling, kayaking and eating.
After many of these precious connecting experiences with Nature there was Always excellent food and drink to enjoy while lounging in the many comfortable spaces on deck.
Calico jack spectacular Everyday. Here it is! Calico Jack sailing vessel is first class and fully equipped with air conditioned sleeping quarters, dining area, sun bathing decks, dive planks and dive master, snorkeling and full scuba dive equipment, kayaks, excellent chefs, adorable helpful staff assisting at every moment.
The diving experience in Raja Ampat was like touring an underwater museum! This is the experience of a lifetime.
Not to be passed up. Rackham and most of his men avoided capture by hiding on the shore and waiting until pirate hunting ships left taking with them all their possessions, including all their rich plunder.
Faced with this severe setback, Captain Jack, and his crew decided to take advantage of the new amnesty deal offered by the English government particularly, in this case, new Governor of Bahamas Woodes Rogers in which all pirates could continue living as free men as long they gave up life of the piracy and privateering.
They traveled to Nassau where they pleased their case to the authorities, describing how Captain Charles Vane forced them all to become pirates.
Governor Woodes Rogers accepted their plea, partly because he was tasked by higher authorities to make serious effort into solving piracy issue in the Caribbean waters, but also because of his strong hatred toward Charles Vane.
John Rackham and his pirates were given Royal Pardon, with the stipulation that they will be put to death if they ever again returned to piracy.
However, the lure of the sea was too strong for many of them, and John Rackham did not remain law abiding citizen for too long.
During his stay in Nassau, Rackham became restless and found trouble by having a affair with Anne Bony, wife of the sailor James Bonny who was also under employment by the Governor Rogers's office.
After the discovery of the affair, furious James Bonny pleaded to the governor to punish his wife with flogging , but John Rackham intervened offering money to him to divorce her legally.
With no peaceful solution found, Rackham and Anne Bonny decided to void his Royal Pardon by stealing sloop from the harbor and fleeing once again to the life of piracy.
Anne Bonny became openly part of the pirate crew, by hidden among the pirate crew members was also Mary Read , another female pirate who at first hid her gender from other pirates by disguising as a man.
Captain Jack and his lover Anne Bonny. Back to the sea again, Captain Calico Jack and his crew started their usual runs against merchants across the Caribbean.
In addition to targeting only merchants, Calico Jack also attacked few smaller pirate vessels, not with a goal of thinning out the competition, but to offer them ability to join his crew.
With ever expanding force of pirates under his command, Calico Jack in just two months managed to cause chaos in the Caribbean.
By late , Bahamas' Governor Woodes Rogers issued the official proclamation that marked Rackham and his entire crew as pirates.
Pirate hunter Jonathan Barnet immediate sprang into action, sailing toward Jamaica where reports claimed that Rackham has recently captured several small fishing vessels.
He managed to surprise pirates who were at that time partying and drinking after a successful round of plundering. Most of the pirates, including Rackham himself, were ashore when the bounty hunters discovered their ship.
They took refuge in the woods as the bounty hunters left with their ship and its treasure. In his classic a "General History of the Pyrates ," Capt.
Charles Johnson tells the exciting story of how Rackham stole a sloop. Rackham and his men were at a town in Cuba, refitting their small sloop, when a Spanish warship charged with patrolling the Cuban coast entered the harbor, along with a small English sloop they had captured.
The Spanish warship saw the pirates but could not get at them at low tide, so they parked in the harbor entrance to wait for morning.
That night, Rackham and his men rowed over to the captured English sloop and overpowered the Spanish guards there. As dawn broke, the warship began blasting Rackham's old ship, now empty, as Rackham and his men silently sailed past in their new prize.
